The Four Necessary Conditions to Cultivate Connection, Safety, and Belonging
Understanding Self
Here we practice introducing ourselves, sharing what is on our hearts, and learning about the four perspectives.
Love-Based Practice
Here we reflect on how we are showing up, delegating work, and completing tasks. Are we operating from a place of fear and control or love, trust and faith?
Patience
As we develop new skills and learn to reprogram our thoughts, beliefs, and approaches, we practice patience for ourselves, our peers and those who present different opinions than us.
Listening with Discipline
Do we know how to listen without cross-talk? Do we catch ourselves interrupting to share our thoughts and ideas? Are we able to pause before jumping in?

Loving Justice Conference Workshop: Intro to CSS - Understanding Self
_edited.jpg)
What I thought would be a circle for 30 participants ballooned to 90+ in minutes. We made room for everyone to join in the circle as I shared who I am, what was on my heart, and encouraged everyone who joined to do the same. We held space for those who became dysregulated, ensuring they felt heard and supported as they shared. We practiced disciplined listening and staying present during a short time frame. A second session was added to review the framework and the four perspectives.
Virtual Circle: Intro to CSS - Understanding Self with mentor Casey Holmes

SEPTEMBER 12
We practiced vulnerability, showing up as we are, holding space, and listening with discipline. Casey shared stories of judgment and shame, of paying attention, and of the responsibility we have to ourselves, the land, and each other. Two cats joined as well.
Ten junior leaders from Upper Nicola participated in four three-hour sessions over two weeks. Students built confidence speaking up in circle, sharing with vulnerability and moving through discomfort. They also practiced listening with discipline and sharing back to the larger group. We discussed the difference between being uncomfortable and being unsafe. The final activity included working with clay, so each student could take something they made home with them.

"I personally loved the course! It was amazing!
I saw no flaws or anything that needed to be changed. One suggestion is to host larger groups as I thought people shared more in larger groups.
Overall, I loved the experience."
